Notes From a Winter Ascent

Field notes on cold, patience, and the arithmetic of turning back.

By LESSBLUR · October 24, 2026

The trail was shorter than the argument about whether to start. Cold makes decisions honest. You either keep the next hundred steps or you turn around while you still can.

Turning back was not failure. It was information about light, wind, and the hour. The same arithmetic belongs in a practice: stop while the stop is still a choice.

I wrote one line when I got home. Not a lesson. A temperature. That was enough to remember the day accurately.
